I'm on the grind just like you. These guides combine research from high-elo players, pro builds, and lessons I've learned (often the hard way) in Bronze and Silver. I write what I wish I knew when I started.

Why Poppy is Perfect for Low Elo

If you’re stuck in Bronze or Silver like me, you’ve probably noticed something: everyone plays assassins and dash-heavy champions. Yasuo, Yone, Zed, Katarina, Riven—they’re everywhere. And that’s exactly why Poppy is your secret weapon.

Poppy’s W ability, Steadfast Presence, completely shuts down any champion that relies on dashes. That Yasuo trying to dash through your team? Stopped. That Riven animation-canceling toward your ADC? Denied. In low elo where mechanical outplays are everyone’s favorite thing to attempt, Poppy says “no.”

She’s also incredibly forgiving. You’re tanky enough to survive mistakes, your kit is straightforward, and you provide massive value to your team even when behind. After researching builds from Diamond+ Poppy mains and testing them in my own games, here’s everything you need to know.

Poppy’s Abilities Explained

Passive: Iron Ambassador

Poppy throws her buckler at enemies, dealing bonus magic damage. The buckler then falls to the ground, and if you pick it up, you get a shield. This passive is huge for trading in lane—throw your buckler, auto-attack, then walk up to grab the shield. Free trades all day.

Pro tip from high-elo players: The buckler bounces off the target and lands behind them. You can use this to zone enemies away from CS or force them to let you pick it up for free.

Q: Hammer Shock

Poppy smashes the ground in front of her, dealing damage and slowing enemies. After a short delay, the area erupts for bonus damage. This is your main damage ability and waveclear tool.

Combo tip: Always E into a wall first, then Q while they’re stunned. They’ll eat both parts of the Q damage because they can’t move.

W: Steadfast Presence

This is Poppy’s signature ability and why she destroys low elo. When activated:

  • You gain bonus movement speed
  • Any enemy that tries to dash near you gets knocked down and grounded
  • This lasts for 2.5 seconds

Champions this destroys: Yasuo, Yone, Riven, Irelia, Akali, Katarina, Lee Sin, Zed, Talon, LeBlanc, Tristana, Lucian, Ezreal, Samira… basically half the roster.

When to use it: Don’t waste this ability. Save it for when the enemy commits to a fight. If Yasuo Es onto you, wait until he tries to dash again, then pop W. He’ll be stuck in your face with no escape.

E: Heroic Charge

Poppy dashes to an enemy and pushes them back. If they hit a wall, they take bonus damage and get stunned for 1.6 seconds. This is your playmaking ability.

Wall stun tip: In low elo, people don’t respect walls. They’ll stand right next to them. Punish this every single time. A wall stun into Q is half their health bar.

Common walls to use:

  • Turrets count as walls
  • The small walls in river near Dragon/Baron
  • Jungle camp walls
  • Base walls during sieges

R: Keeper’s Verdict

Poppy charges up her hammer and swings. If you tap R quickly, it’s a short-range knockup. If you charge it fully, you yeet the enemy across the map back to their fountain.

When to tap R (short knockup):

  • When your team can follow up with damage
  • To interrupt channels (Katarina R, MF R, etc.)
  • In small skirmishes where you want to keep fighting

When to charge R (full send):

  • To remove the fed enemy carry from a teamfight
  • To turn a 5v5 into a 5v4
  • To save a teammate by yeeting the enemy diving them
  • To cancel objectives (smack the jungler away from Dragon)

Poppy Matchups

Easy Matchups (Poppy Favored)

  • Riven – Your W cancels all her dashes. She literally can’t play the game.
  • Yasuo – Same deal. No dashes = no Yasuo.
  • Irelia – She needs to dash to stack her passive. You say no.
  • Camille – Her E hookshot gets cancelled by your W. Free lane.
  • Fiora – She can’t proc vitals if she can’t dash around you. For detailed strategies, check out our Fiora vs Riven matchup guide.

Hard Matchups (Play Safe)

  • Mordekaiser – He doesn’t dash, he just runs you down and steals your stats.
  • Darius – Similar problem. He pulls you in and out-sustains you.
  • Illaoi – Tentacles don’t care about your W. Don’t fight her in her ultimate.
  • Vayne/Quinn – Ranged tops are tough. Farm under tower and wait for ganks.

Skill Matchups

  • Sett – Whoever lands their combo first wins. Don’t get hit by his W true damage.
  • Garen – He’s simple like you. Short trades with Q, disengage before he silences you.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Want to improve faster? Consider coaching with replay review to identify your mistakes.

After playing Poppy and watching VOD reviews from high-elo players, here are the mistakes I see constantly in low elo:

  1. Wasting W randomly – This is a 20+ second cooldown. If you pop it and the enemy just walks away, you’re vulnerable for a long time.
  2. E-ing without a wall – An E without a wall stun is just a gap closer with no CC. Always look for the wall stun angle.
  3. Charging R when you should tap – In teamfights, a quick knockup often does more than sending one person away. Your team needs the CC.
  4. Not picking up your passive shield – Free shield on the ground. Walk over it. So many Poppys forget this exists.
  5. Fighting without Grasp stacked – Before trading, hit a minion 3 times to stack Grasp. Then go in.

When to Pick Poppy

Pick Poppy when:

  • Enemy team has 2+ dash-reliant champions
  • Your team needs a frontline tank
  • Enemy has assassins that will dive your carries
  • You want a simple, effective champion

Don’t pick Poppy when:

  • Enemy team is all mages/immobile champions (your W is less valuable)
  • Your team already has 2+ tanks (need more damage)
  • You’re against multiple ranged top laners in a counter-pick situation

Final Thoughts

Poppy is one of the most underrated champions for climbing out of low elo. She’s mechanically simple, she counters half the popular champion pool, and she’s always useful to her team. You don’t need flashy mechanics to win games—you need to stop the enemy’s flashy mechanics. And nobody does that better than Poppy.

Give her a try for 10-20 games. Focus on landing wall stuns and timing your W correctly. I guarantee you’ll start seeing results.
